VIDEO: Secretary Clinton???s Address on the Human Rights of LGBT People ?? humanrights.gov

2011-12-07 00:00:00 -0500

Secretary Hilary Clinton gives a very compelling speech on the advocacy for equal rights of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Its a 30 minute video and I feel she supports her arguments well. For me, she was preaching to the choir, but I hope her statesmanship is able to change the hearts and minds of others in power. And for those of you who do not share the view that the LGBT community should be afforded the same rights and freedoms as everyone else, please set aside your opinions for a moment and hear her argument.

This Year I Switched to Shutterfly For The Family Photo Calendar

2011-12-07 00:00:00 -0500

This year I switched to Shutterfly for the family photo calendar.  For the past several years, I have used iPhoto and Apple's print services.  This summer I switched to Picasa.  Rather than bring all my calendar photos back into iPhoto, I chose to use one of the many available Internet printing services out there.  Picasa allows for direct upload to many of these sites.  I studied Snapfish and Shutterfly closely and it seemed that Shutterfly was slightly cheaper.  There shipping seemed more expensive, but a couple of coupon codes negated that.

Apple's 13x10 calendars cost $19.99/calendar with ~$6 shipping.  Shutterfly's 8.5x11 cost $13.68 and ~$8 shipping.  To be fair, Shutterfly's calendar *is* a bit smaller and the price is after a promotional 40% discount, good only up to today.  However, in addition to that we had a $10 off coupon and a 50% off shipping coupon.  In the end it was cheaper, but only because of the sale.  I would recommend shopping around before you commit to an order.

The web-based interface worked fine.  Of course you can't compare it to iPhoto's native application interface.  iPhoto is far superior in that department.  Still it was good enough.  Shutterfly's print and paper quality won't be known until it arrives.

Oracle JDK7 Mac OS X Port Developer Preview Release ??? Java.net

2011-12-07 00:00:00 -0500

Check out this website I found at jdk7.java.net

All I can say is "About Time"! In my minimal testing, it seems to work. I tested on OS X (10.6.8). I found that with Maven 3.02 setting JAVA_HOME was not enough. I think there may be a bug in the mvn script with paths that have spaces in them? After looking at the script, I found that setting JAVACMD="$JAVA_HOME"/bin/java that maven then worked as expected.

Use 2-step Verification for your Google Account

Why you should use 2-step verification

"2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your Google Account by requiring you to have access to your phone ??? as well as your username and password ??? when you sign in. In addition to your username and password, you'll enter a code that Google will send you via text or voice message upon signing in.

2-step verification drastically reduces the chances of having the personal information in your Google account stolen by someone else. Why? Because hackers would have to not only get your password and your username, they'd have to get a hold of your phone."

I recently switched to using 2-step verification and it is only a little more work and a lot more secure. There are a couple of apps that don't work with it - like the Picasa Logitech Revue App, but most will work using an "application specific password". This video talks about those as well. I was recently prompted by a friend to do this after E-mails in my name that *appeared* to come from my gmail account. In the end it was a spoof and my account was fine. Still it scared me enough to change my password and switch to 2-step verification.
