As an experiment, I have switched to Chrome on my Macs as my primary browser. My 1Password and Evernote extensions are very early in their development so the experience not quite as smooth as safari. But the browser is fast and seems to hog fewer resources than Safari.

Buzz Out Loud 1228: We salute you, Tom Merritt (podcast) | Buzz Out Loud Podcast - CNET Blogs

2010-05-26 00:00:00 -0400

Tom Merritt left Buzz Out Loud (BOL). I stopped listening to BOL years ago, but I still follow the "characters" that originally launched that show. Veronica Belmont left July 2007. She was the young, girl-next-door, geek's dream gf/bff, and definitely brought in a couple of different demographics to the BOL show. She moved on to other adventures. It seems Tom Merritt is ready for new adventures too.

During his tenure on BOL, Tom Merritt demonstrated journalistic integrity by considering both sides of popular technology issues, often playing devil's advocate to Molly Wood's position.  He was articulate and quick with the nerdy jokes that would make you roll your eyes and groan.  He will be starting with Leo Laporte's TWiT network June 1.  I look forward to seeing what he does next.

That leaves Molly Wood as that last original member of the BOL team. Molly is famous for her rants which used to be entertaining, but as time passed they seemed to impede rational discussion rather than provide insightful opinion and passion to technology news.  I may just have to start listening to the show to see how the dynamic changes with Tom gone.

Second Wave - Google Wave Has E-Mail Notifications

2010-05-21 00:00:00 -0400

Its been MONTHS since I visited google Wave. Its a huge resource hog so I don't leave it open like e-mail. I had about 20 unread messages to catch up on. I also discovered that google wave now supports e-mail notifications so you don't have keeping loading up the bloated thing just to see if there are new posts. Second, when using Google Chrome web browser, it doesn't take up nearly as much memory. Google Chrome (and its child procs) seem to take up about 200M. Safari, 665M. Chrome is also much faster and seems to render Wave better.

It also appears that you can remove people from Waves.. but what about your contacts?

The e-mail thing will definitely encourage me to use it more.

Google Wave Available for Everyone

Tuesday, May 18, 2010 | 4:10 PM

Starting today, we are making Google Wave openly available to everyone as part of Google Labs. You no longer need an invitation to wave -- simply visit wave.google.com and sign right in. Likewise, if you are a Google Apps administrator at a business, school or organization, you can now easily enable Google Wave for all your users at no extra cost (more on our Enterprise blog).

This one slipped by quietly.. I need to start paying more attention!

Sweet! The latest Google Chrome is indeed even faster than the last Mac version I tried. I'm still waiting for stable support for 1Password (http://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password), Xmarks (http://www.xmarks.com/), and Evernote(http://evernote.com) on it though. I live for these plugins in my browsers. In fairness, it is looking like Xmarks plugin is fairly complete now.
