Google at work on desktop Linux | The Register

If you were going to make an OS, it makes sense to start with something rather than re-invent the wheel. Linux is an awesome OS but is still, after all these years, kind of rough around the edges for an end user Desktop environment. It really seems like Desktop Linux needs someone to take it that last mile.  Someone needs to give it that last bit of refinement that makes the user experience truly enjoyable.

Google could do this, but why? Where's the pay off? As much as I'd love for anyone to get Desktop Linux to where OS X is today, I just don't see it happening. It would seem to make more sense for Google to develop a cross-platform thin client (firefox + web 2.0) that accesses Google Ads .. and services.

JWDWeb Documentation Wiki

I finally got Dokuwiki installed on JWDWeb.  The intent is to keep various bits of documentation that doesn't belong in a blog there.  Dokuwiki makes it pretty easy to author things.  I set Dokuwiki up in my work environment in an effort to promote self-help/collaborative documentation.  It has worked well there - even if I'm still the primary contributor.

Mendon Parks Winter Festival, January 2006

Last weekend Abby, Emma, and I went to the Mendon Park Winter Festival.  It was more of a casual get together than a festival.  It was pretty dead there and Emma would have been happy to just take a nap. Pictures are up:

Emma's First Steps, January 27, 2006

Emma took her first, documented, steps yesterday evening.  I say "documented" because she has been standing and lunging for things this past week, but this is the first time we got her on video actually stepping.  Earlier in the day she had made steps, but I didn't have the camera out!  Emma is 10 months old.  This is a major milestone!
