I almost hit an SUV in the parking garage a couple of weeks back. The parking garage is heated. Its about 40 F in the garage. Consequently, there are lots of big puddles of water from all the snow that cars bring in. The way the garage is set up, you have practically zero visibility pulling out into the garage traffic. To make matters worse a big suburban was parked on the very end so as I approached the point at which I had to turn an SUV flew out from behind the suburban. Normally this would not have been a problem. My car stops on a dime, but not that day. In a fraction of a second my mind processed the fact that my brakes were not stopping me! I stood on the break and managed to stop 3 feet in front of the SUV. The funny thing is if the SUV had kept going at his current speed, we never would have hit anyway. When he saw me coming at him, he stopped. I ended up at his passenger side door. My ABS never kicked in. Clearly something was wrong with my breaks. Based on this discussion, it sounds like big breaks like my STi's like to be warm and dry. I also wonder if my front pads need to be replaced. I'm seeing some scoring on the rotors. The dealership says both the rotors and the pads are fine - that I have 5mm left on the pads.

Ok... Silliness...

Well I survived my first soccer game in many years. Our team won, 8-4, against the "Misfits" and I had a hat trick - 3 goals. The level of play is pretty low in this league. In fact, some of the people on the other team had never played soccer before. I think most of the other teams are a lot better than the "Misfits."

I'm glad we played this team first. We got a good lead, 5-0, so we never had to work hard to catch up points. I was concerned that I might not be up to it physically. This was a good starter game for me. I was sucking wind the whole time. I only felt tightness in my chest and I'm pretty sure that was just my lungs trying to get O2. I've felt a little light headed since Thursday, but that seems to come and go regardless of what I do.

The last indoor soccer league I was on (in NC) was very competitive and rough. There were a lot of heated (usually verbal) exchanges and the refs seldom made an effort to diffuse the situation. In this league, there's no checking, sliding, etc. It should make the games a lot friendlier. They also have an interesting rule that allows the other team to add an extra player if down by 5 points.

We play Thursday nights at Total Sports Experience. Our team is sponsored by Acme Bar & Pizza and the soccer schedule is here.

BSG: Episode "You Can't Go Home Again"

The BSG writers are skating on thin ice. In this week's episode "You Can't Go Home Again," Starbuck is stranded on a moon after a serious solo dog fight with 8+? cylon fighters. On the moon, she manages to find a downed cylon craft and get it working. The ship is based on organic technology. She cuts her way into it. The ship's cockpit has a big hole in it from the dog fight and she plugs it with part of her space suit. She figures out how to fly it.. somehow.. and takes it into space. I found it hard to suspend disbelief that this ship could pressurize and protect her body from the vacuum of space using a just a space suit "plug." Perhaps it is my child-like understanding of space.?

The other tough pill to swallow is to know that Adama would put the last vestige of humanity at risk to save one fighter pilot - as hot as she might be. For the show to succeed, it has to be about the drama and not the tech., but it must still follow some sort of rule book for what is and is not allowed. Otherwise, the drama becomes meaningless. If in the next episode I see Starbuck get out of a sticky situation by clicking her heels three times and saying "There's no place like Caprica! There's no place like Carpica! ..." I'm turning the TV off!
